11 Jobs That Secretly Celebrate Mothers Day Every Day

11 Jobs That Secretly Celebrate Mothers Day Every Day11 Jobs That Secretly Celebrate Mothers Day Every DayThe proverb It takes a village to raise a child is so frequently used that it has become a clich. Yet it points to the many influences and caregivers children encounter on their journey to adulthood- doctors, nurses, daycare providers, schoolteachers, babysitters, coaches, tutors, camp counselors and all the rest of the people who directly impact a childs life. But what about the woman who plays a large role in making sure the child is fed, clothed and gets to school, practice or camp? In honor of Mothers Day, wed like to introduce a new proverb It takes a village to erleichterung a mother. Most jobs in some way impact the life of a mother. 3D Printing Hack Downs Drone

3D Printing Hack Downs Drone 3D Printing Hack Downs Drone 3D Printing Hack Downs DroneThe 3D-printed consumer drone hovers in mid-air, as pulsing percussion hints of doom. Then, less than two minutes into its first flight, which welches captured on a YouTube video, the drone spins out of control and crashes. The cause of the crash? The first successful attempt to hack into a computer and manipulation an additive manufacturing design, said researcher Mark Yampolskiy of the University of South Alabama, the coauthor, with researchers from Ben Gurion University and Singapore University of Technology and Design, of a paper on the hack. The YouTube video, posted in August 2016 and watched by more than 36,000 people so far, could be the Cliffs Notes for the paper.Manufacturers are already making parts for jet engines and other machines using additive manufacturing. Engineers are generally very good at accounting for random natural variations of physical processes, Yampolskiy said, both during manufacturing itself and in real-life conditions a manufactured part will be exposed to.These are often accounted for by incorporating a safety factor in the design. Unfortunately, engineers also generally overlook security aspects, he said.3D-printed rotor blades make this quadcopter vulnerable to sabotage. Image Mark Yampolskiy, University of South AlabamaPrevious demonstration sabotages of 3D printing designs started with the perpetrator already inside the computer hosting the design. Then the perpetrator simply manipulated blueprints and showed that it could harm mechanical properties, Yampolskiy said. His teams attack went a step further. They used an ordinary phishing attack, sending an e-mail that downloaded an infected zip file. That gave the researchers what they called a reverse tunnel into the computer hosting the design. They manipulated the design and inserted cavities into the propeller blades. The cavities caused the propeller to break in mid-air.In theory, the qualit y-control process could catch defective parts made from a sabotaged design. But in this case, the additively manufactured drone wing was sabotaged in a way that would escape detection during typical quality-control measures. All of these tests have limits in terms of defects that can be detected, Yampolskiy said. A physical inspection could also have revealed the problem, said Sven Schrecker, chief architect for IoT security solutions at Intel. However, the novelty in this particular attack is that the compromise is digital, the tampering is very subtle and may not have been caught, as it is not visible to the human eye, he said.Defects inserted in the control files for a 3D printer weakened blades on this quadcopter, causing a crash. Image Mark Yampolskiy, University of South AlabamaThe part was also sabotaged to not fail right awayanother way for the product to make it through manufacturing quality control, then fail when in use. To prevent sabotage attempts, one possible solution would be to create designs of functional parts with a higher safety factor, Yampolskiy said. But this would increase size, weight, and cost, which would make this approach impractical and unlikely, he said. Another approach would be to develop the ability to detect ongoing or already successful attacks, but this would require better quality control measures than are currently available. The demonstration is already forcing the additive manufacturing industry to adopt cybersecurity best practices by making sure software and firmware are up to date constantly monitoring network traffic and creating an air gap between the internet and the production network, he said. The integrity of each product and component in the supply chain must also be attested to, Schrecker said. The owner or operator of the equipment must be able to interrogate each component of the system to attest to that elements integrity. Each component, in turn, interrogates its subcomponents to attest to their integrity a nd, when complete, reports its findings. After successfully showing that 3D-printed designs can be hacked and sabotaged, Elovici and Yampolskiy have turned to preventing attacks before they succeed. A thwarted sabotage may not make for an exciting YouTube video, but it would be an important step forward.Karen Haywood Queen is a technology writer based in Williamsburg, VA.Engineers are generally very good at accounting for random natural variations of physical processes Unfortunately, engineers also generally overlook security aspects. 5 Ways to Kick Start a New Career After Quitting

5 Ways to Kick Start a New Career After Quitting5 Ways to Kick Start a New Career After QuittingYouve just quit your job- with nothing on the horizon.Yikes.There are plenty of good reasons to leave a job that isnt furthering your career The situation is toxic, your mobility is stalled, youre ready to forge a new career path, just to name a few. But not having a clear idea of what youre doing next can make the process of leaving feel equal parts liberating, exciting, and, yes, also terrifying. If youre feeling overwhelmed by your next steps, take heart You are already braver and bolder than you realize. Lean on the gift of time now on your side, and on the lessons learned from those whove explored time off before you. Yours will be your own path, but fear not There are some well-trodden steps to lead you along the way. Here are five key starting points that helped me in my own transition to a new adventure- may they help you thrive every step of the way, too. 1. Take Stock and ReflectT his is easy to forget while youre hustling for your next gig, but its an important step of the journey. Before you get too deep into your next play, take a beat and reflect. What have you accomplished so far, and what do you want to accomplish next? What goals did you have in your last gig, and which are totenstill left to hit? When you look at those goals you achieved and those you did not, try to figure out what welches missing, be it time, interest, a skill set, or just a change in priorities. Do the same quick audit for those you did accomplish- there will likely be some patterns as to why you focused on certain areas and how much progress you were able to make. If your interests have changed, honor that in your next gig. Think about which projects made you happiest, in and outside of work. Take advantage of this new gift of free time while it lasts, and think. Remember that the goal is not to overwhelm (careful not to go down the rabbit hole of Who am I and what am I doing with my life?), but to stop to pat yourself on the back for everything youve accomplished and pause to think about everything you want to do later down the line. Looking back, I realized that the whole of my career path has been one of chasing learning curves and building skill sets, and it welches comforting to see this charted out on paper and know that for me, leaving my job welches part of a greater cycle of growth. I realized that Id done this sort of thing before, and it had always worked itself out. That was encouraging as I ventured into the great unknown. 2. Stop Taking StockYes, it may seem contradictory, but hear me out. If youve just quit, it should come as no surprise that you will have a lot on your mind. You will be tempted to keep thinking about whats next (I just quit my job I have bills to pay I dont want to move back home), but do yourself a favor and take a breath, or a vacation. Visit a new place in town. Shake up your routine. Try to stop thinking about the fact th at you just did this enormous, career-changing thing. Heres why Think about how many a-ha moments come to us in the shower, while walking the dog, or some other time when we are not at work- a lot Our brain is always working on things even when we arent, so try to calm your inner voice and trust that your brain is still doing some valuable thinking for you. I cant tell you what your a-ha moment will be or when it will come, but I can say that its a crucial step in getting you outside of your head. I knew I was overdue for a break when I started having dreams about paperwork- how dull and entirely unproductive Be comfortable taking a mental vacation.3. ReconnectIts also worth spending some of your post-quitting free time going back to your roots and seeing the people who matter most in your life. Reconnect with both the people who know you best (family, friends, significant others) and the people who you share similar values with or aspire to be (mentors, role models, old colleagues) .Share your struggles, dreams, frustrations, and ambitions with them- and these may or may not be work-related This is about understanding more about who you are at the core, and about what makes your heart beat faster in good times and bad. Ask trusted confidantes for feedback on how youve handled transitions in the past, and when theyve seen you happiest, partieally or professionally. See if they can pinpoint when and why youve thrived. Keep in mind that everyone will offer different advice for how to approach finding your next gig, depending on his or her own personal history, which is why gleaning specific advice on what to do next may be less useful than getting feedback on how you as a person have handled previous life transitions and adapted to change in the past. This is useful, because outside perspectives can often provide valuable nuggets of information that are obvious to others but that you never would have seen. In my case, the friend who has known me longest told me s he had seen me happiest when things moved fast and were constantly new, and when I had autonomy to make things happen. And it was true. I thrive where there is less structure I see opportunity in chaos learning on the job is a major priority for me. So I looked for companies in the midst of great change, transition, and accelerated growth where I would have the opportunity to make an impact.4. FreelanceThinking about running a business? Curious as to whether anyone besides mom will pay for your graphic design skills? Self-taught and not sure if youre ready for a full-time gig? Worried about filling that unemployed gap on your resume? Freelancing can help answer all of these questions and concerns and more. For me, freelancing was a way of expanding my portfolio and taking on small projects that allowed me to explore an area Id always been interested in UX design. Id been offering product and UX advice to startup friends gratis during my last job, and at a certain point realized I co uld be even more helpful to them if I dedicated more than just a coffee catch ups worth of thinking time to their questions. In a sense, I was already acting as a consultant- I just hadnt formalized it yet. Freelancing is also a great chance to learn more about yourself. When you freelance, you learn how to manage the full project life cycle, from sourcing clients to producing final deliverables, and it becomes clear which part of that cycle you enjoy most (and which you would rather do without). In my case, I learned that I disliked sourcing projects- it felt like I was spending more time talking about potential projects than actually executing on them, and that was frustrating to me. That confirmed what I already suspected a role that centered around business development would not be the right fit for me. (Other people, of course, love that part of the process, and they would be great in BD.) As you take on side gigs, pay close attention to where you hit your stride- and where you stumble- which can provide important insight into what you should be looking to do next.5. Wrap Up That Side ProjectYou know which project Im talking about. The half-finished website you started coding on your own six months ago. The speaker series youve been meaning to organize since forever. The novel you promised yourself youd write before you turned 30. Time is a luxury that few of us have- and you now have enough time to turn that side project into a full-time project. Honor it. Finish it. Learn the skills you need to get it done, and get after it. If youre worried that your side project is taking up too much time from applying for jobs or networking, just remember that you never know where that side project might take you. In fact, it may very well become the most valuable part of your resume, or could even surprise you by turning into a full-time job itself. My side project? Learning enough front-end to throw up a portfolio page, then taking the time to write about all the t hings I was learning in my free time. They showed I had been thinking in earnest about the types of challenges and changes my industry is undergoing, and they became just as valuable on my resume as the freelance projects I was delivering. So there you have it some first steps for navigating the great, great unknown. Be patient if it doesnt happen overnight- landing softly is a process. But with a little bit of luck, a lot of hard work, and a healthy dose of introspection, youll find your place. Trust in yourself and in the process. Find what works for you. When the time is right, you will land exactly where you need to be. Photo of balls courtesy of Shutterstock.

Why Your Friends Are A Great Resource To Finding Employment

Why Your Friends Are A Great Resource To Finding EmploymentWhy Your Friends Are A Great Resource To Finding EmploymentTheres nothing quite as painful as unemployment with no prospects. If youre unemployed, you are aware of the toll it can take on you. Whether you were fired or laid off, there can be emotional feelings of rejection and a lack of confidence in your ability to do a good job. There are also those normal feelings of fear and anxiety because employment is the way a person is able to provide for their own well-being and their family. When the cash flow comes to a complete halt, it is time to reevaluate the financial situation and figure out how to make things work. Your first instinct usually involves you trying to figure out how to find a job fast.If you have found yourself in this predicament, please do not go online and read those articles about people who were unemployed for months and months on end. Unemployment doesnt have to be a way of life for you. It is possible t o get back on your feet and provide for your needs effectively. It is important to become extremely strategic when youre looking for a job. When its time to begin the job search, many people brush up their resumes and start applying to jobs like crazy. However, one of the best and most underused resources to find employment are the people in your inner circle. Your friends are important through this process for a few reasons.NetworkingAnyone in the working world will confirm that its not always what you know but who you know. Networking and making connections are vital for success. A popular quote says that no man is an island. This is especially true when that man wants a job. Even though it may be embarrassing at first, dont be afraid to put yourself out there and tell your friends whats going on. You dont necessarily need to tell them how you lost your job if you dont want to. However, whats most important is that you share that youre on the market and youre looking for paid empl oyment. Ask them if they know about anyone who is looking. In addition to asking your personal connections, log on to Facebook. Most people might turn a blind eye if you post a status sharing that you need a job. However, not everyone will. There are people who know of others who are hiring. It doesnt hurt to try. If your Facebook friends list has at least 200 people on it, there are at least five people who will respond with a direct connection that they know of. All you need is one job. Dont be afraid to post a Facebook status. All you need to say is that youre looking for a great job. Let people know that if they have any leads, they should send you a direct message in your inbox and take it from there. Youd be surprised how many people know of leads and are willing to help someone else out, even if its just an acquaintance through Facebook. If youd like to know how to find a job fast, try this effort first.Proofreading PolishIron sharpens iron, so does one man do for another. No matter who your friends are, you should be able to learn from them and get a helpful perspective when you need it. The same applies to the job hunt. If you walked out of the bathroom with toilet paper stuck to your shoe or if you were walking around with a booger hanging from your nose, you would want someone who cares to tell you. Many people walk around with hypothetical tissue paper or boogers stuck to their resumes. When youve written your own resume, it can be hard for you to see what improvements should be made in order to get great results. Its also very easy to overlook simple spelling and grammatical errors. While these might be simple errors, they usually stand out to a potential employer and dont look very good. In order to keep your resume from closing the door to your own success, have a few friends look it over. If you have any friends who are good writers and editors, have them look over the resume and make the necessary changes. Sometimes, its not enough to rely on t he spell checker in your word processing program or editing software. There are times when another pair of menschengerecht eyes is helpful to replace weak words with power words and turn a resume into a shining and strong representation of the work you can do and the expertise you can offer to a company.Strengths FinderGood friends are also important because they can help you find yourself. If you really think about it, your thoughts can get in your own way. Unless you have really high self-esteem, it is easy to doubt yourself and your abilities. A good friend will stand in the gap and help you find your strengths and harness them for a great career. Many times, the things were good at are right under our noses. However, because we do them so well, we dont notice the impact that those skills possess.Sometimes it takes someone on the outside to see that particular strength and encourage us to pursue a career that allows or encourages the use of that strength. If you are in a position where youve been fired from a job because you werent good at it, now is a good time to take a look at yourself and do some research. Within that research, reach out to friends and loved ones. Ask them what they think youre good at. Youd be surprised at the answers you might get. After asking multiple people, take a look at the answers that seem to be the same. Use the similar answers as a starting point to find what job will fit those strengths. It might mean that you have to start in a new field. However, when you work in the area that youre strongest in, this is a great way to find employment and keep it for the long haul.Author Bio Paul Langdon is the Job Connection Program Manager. Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration

Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration Origami Provides Unexpected Inspiration Origami Provides Unexpected InspirationWhen you consider what could possibly inspire the design of a bulletproof shield to protect law enforcement, you probably wouldnt choose origami first. Or second. Or even 102nd.We were working on going from origami for paper to other things, says Larry Howell, professor of mechanical engineering and associate dean for the college of engineering and technology at Brigham Young University.Paper creases well but you want the same properties here with origami to fold something flat and expand out. For example, doing it with solar panels. We had been discovering many ways of taking origami from paper art to engineering applications. Bulletproof material is definitely not what you would think of when it comes to origami, but we saw deployable barriers as a possibility. For the bulletproof material used in the shield, the team looked at choices such as canvass and fiberglass before finally deciding on Kevlar. You can compress the shield down in a very compact state made of six layers of Kevlar, he says. It has six layers of Kevlar and then you can fold down the panels so 12 layers of Kevlar overall. Kevlar is bullet resistant but its actually not resistant to sunlight and water. So on the outside cover it has ballistic nylon, the same material for things like backpacks and laptop cases. The new ballistic barrier is made of 12 layers of Kevlar and can fold up and stow in a vehicle. Image Brigham Young UniversityAn advantage is that it stows very compactly, he says, adding that it weighs 55 pounds in the current configuration, with the barrier being about 50 pounds and then the other hardware, such as handles, adding another five pounds. He estimates it deploys in about five seconds. Most shields arent actually even deployable, he explains. Most are just chunks of steel like any shield, and the few that are deployable are things you have to assemble. The s hield also has a curvature that provides some flank protection, he says. There welches a great deal of adjustment along the way, using prototypes. We started out with paper, then went to card stock, which is rigid but still easy to work with, and then we moved to full-scale prototype with canvas and fiberglass, he says. Thats where we worked out a lot of bugs, and then we moved to Kevlar. We want to improve the shield to have different sizes. For a SWAT team you can have about three people taking cover behind this, but for an individual police officer there is value to having smaller ones. We also want to get deploying time down. They tested the shield with local company Action Target, going out to a local county sheriffs shooting range, where they had law enforcement at the federal and local levels subject it to live fire, says Howell. We went with a 9-millimeter, a .357 Magnum, and a .44 Magnum and the shield did well, he says. We thought it wouldnt work if an assault rifle was used and, when it was fired, it did go through the shield.Howell found the response from law enforcement to be very positive, not just in terms of the effectiveness of the shield but also the thought that went into its creation. They really just thanked us for caring about their safety and that means a lot, he says. Its also been great to have so many students involved and most were mechanical engineers. You want to show them that what they learn has meaningful applications. Seeing what comes of it is energizing, especially when you see that it can possibly make a positive difference.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion You want to show them students that what they learn has meaningful applications. Seeing what comes of it is energizing. Prof. Larry Howell, Brigham Young University

Event coordinators sought after by businesses

Event coordinators sought after by businesses Event coordinators sought after by businessesPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun Almost more than for any other industry, event management is all about relationships. Its about developing and leveraging those relationships, communicating and delivering what clients want. To optimise relationships in an increasingly competitive Australian market, businesses need to ensure that all client communication and contact, from big events to everyday meetings, is positive. According to Jenny Jenkins, General Manager for Business at Think Education, businesses need to make the most of every opportunity to do this. Every client meeting is an opportunity for an organisation to reinforce their brand, value and expertise, says Jenkins. Companies are starting to realise the importance of this kind of positive interaction and are developing full-time events coordinator roles to help ensure that every point of contact is memorable for the right reasons. The job market in events is expanding as businesses grow to meet the increasingly competitive nature of weltumspannend markets. The focus on building client relationships and networking in business means that labour and time must be dedicated to entertaining and facilitating relationship-building exercises. This is particularly relevant in corporate settings, such as finance and technology services, where we are seeing an increase in demand for events coordinators. It is a business that thrives on creativity and flair as well as sound business principles like risk management, says Jenkins. Any event that involves a company and its clients will benefit from a high quality, experienced and trained professional who can successfully execute the event on time and within budget. Events coordinators alleviate the stress and workload for busy company principals, allowing them to concentrate on the business of the day and priority outcomes, rather than the mechanics of event organisation, says Jenkins. The development of these sorts of roles represents an exciting opportunity for both new graduates and those wishing to take on a new career direction. Twenty-one year old Jessica Marshall recently completed a Bachelor of Business majoring in events management at APM College of Business and Management, graduating in December after just two years of study. Thanks to part-time and volunteer work she gained while studying, Marshall walked straight into a full-time role with Engineers Australia in January. Within Engineers Australia I am personally responsible for Australian Engineering Week, a number of high school programs and educational forums, industry luncheons and the Engineering Excellence Awards, our biggest event of the year. In a single day I can go from inputting registration data and peoples dietary requirements to booking venues and catering, tocreating budgets and attending sponsorship meetings. As the lead time to an event gets shorter you will find t hat the days can become longer and busier, but I like that there is always something different to work on. Ms Marshall believes that the business and events skills and training she developed at APM has placed her in good stead to thrive in her first full-time role. The course welches very hands-on and industry-focused and really helped me prepare for the role. All of the lecturers heavily encouraged students to get involved with different events and volunteer to get as much experience as we could. I did this a few times and I caught the events bug. During my time volunteering I welches involved in over 15 different events, including Sydney Fashion Weekend, Sydneys Blackmores marathon and racing events at Mount Panorama, says Marshall. It was through this volunteering that I got to see how events really run, what is required and expected, and I got a sense of what I would be up against onceI joined the workplace.I made some great contacts and friends, most of whom I am still in c ontact with. Now that Im in the workforce, I can also see how relevant all of the assessment tasks were to the work I am doing. For Marshall, the study really paid off. I love my job I was lucky because by the timeI finished my degree at APM I was ready to hit the ground running. My job has allowed me to test myself, and ultimately prove to myself that all thattime spent studying was well worth it. Events and marketing are currently the most popular courses for study at APM. We have seen a decided increase in the number of working professionals returning to study events management, keen to switch careers or secure a role in events with their current employer, says Jenny Jenkins from Think Education. Events management has always been a popular career path but securing a great role can be highly competitive. The online course allows those working full-time to formalise their professional experiences without having to commit to full-time study, says Jenkins. The Group You Should StartNow

The Group You Should StartNowThe Group You Should Start- NowYouve bought and read Lean In. Youve internalized Sheryl Sandbergs advice on not taking your foot off the career brake until youre sure you want to, on the dos and donts of working with a mentor, and, of course, on taking a seat at the table. Youve renewed your commitment to yourself and your career. But have you seriously given thought to creating a Lean In circle, as she suggests? In 2012- yep, before Sandbergs book came out- a friend and I formed our own career group of 11 women in order to create a drumherum where we could share ideas, support, and resources. Our positions and fields are diverse- a partial list includes an entrepreneur, a nurse, a teacher, a creative director, two project managers, an architect, and a lawyer- and we range in age from 28 to 40. Our monthly meetings have helped us navigate salary negotiations, difficult conversations with co-workers, and growing into seniority, among many other topics. It h as been an immensely satisfying experience that continues to help all of us as we navigate challenges and successes at our jobs- and one that Id recommend to anyone. If youve ever thought about starting a career group, here are the most important things Ive learned in the last 18 months.1. Go Outside Your Friend GroupSince a friend and I started our group, our first impulse was to invite all of our shared friends to join, too. But we quickly realized that we didnt want the group to only be friends who already knew each other well, so we extended invitations to friends of friends, acquaintances, and past colleagues. And were so glad we did As we learned, going outside of our immediate friend group helps keep the focus on specific issues or discussions (rather than personal catch up) and also diversifies the collective experience and perspective of the members.2. Set a Meeting ScheduleDuring the first few months of forming the group, we would schedule each meeting at a time over emaill e. This worked to some degree, but it meant that meetings were irregularly spaced- anywhere from four to eight weeks apart- and between 11 people, there was always a lot of back and forth about scheduling.Eventually, we decided that having a set day and time was best, and we picked the second Wednesday of every month. This way, its a permanent fixture on everyones calendar, making scheduling simpler and ensuring we didnt accidentally go two months without meeting. We keep meetings to two hours and start and end promptly to be respectful of peoples busy schedules.3. Have a PlanIn order to make our time together valuable, every meeting is focused around a specific topic and run by one member. The structure of the meeting, and whether there is any assigned activity, homework, or reading, is up to that person. About a week prior, she will email everyone to remind them of the subject, explain what well be doing or reading, and confirm attendance.A typical meeting might start with a brief round of updates followed by the main discussion. Some discussions are very freewheeling and loose during others well go around in a circle sharing one by one. Just recently weve started to discuss mixing up the format to keep things interesting and cover topics in new ways- for example, breaking up in to small groups to practice presentations or to role play negotiations. At the end of every meeting, we discuss what we want to cover at the next one and agree on who will lead it.4. Spread ResponsibilityWhen we first started our group, one woman always led the meetings. She did a fantastic job, but it meant that everyone else got to be comfortably passive, letting someone else be in control. Now, we all agree on a topic in advance, but switch who leads the meeting every month. This keeps everyone bought in and engaged with the topics and the larger purpose of the group. It also lets each person exercise her creativity (how do we want to structure the meeting? what reading do we want to ask people to do in advance?) and leadership skills.5. Keep Personal Updates ModeratedWhile our group is not composed entirely of close friends, weve all come to really like each other, and its easy to spend an entire hour- or more- chatting about things that have happened since the last time we met. And while we love the personal updates, we dont want them to take up all of our time, so we limit them to around three minutes per person. (We actually have someone watch the clock to keep things more or less on schedule)Another option is to have a limited number of people give updates and to give them a little longer to share, switching up who speaks each meeting. In order to satisfy our interest in plain old socializing, we occasionally meet for happy hours or other events separate from our monthly meetings as well.6. Ask People to CommitNo matter how much we all see the value in our career group, life intervenes- for everybody. Once people stop making most meetings or dont notify the group if they cant attend, we tend to lose momentum and have less satisfying discussions.Initially, we didnt like the idea of taking attendance, but in order for the group to work, we have found that it works best to check in with group members every six months to a year. For people who just dont have time to show up reliably, this provides a comfortable way for them to bow out. For people who do want to continue being a part of the group, we ask for a reaffirmation of their commitment. For us this means Attending most meetings (we meet about 10 times a year) Letting people know if we cant make a meeting When its our turn to lead a meeting, we distribute any related readings or exercises a week in advance of the meeting date to give people time to prepare.Having a career group has been one of the best things I could have done for my confidence, excitement, and overall satisfaction about my career development and choices. If youre interested in forming your own group, hopefully what Ive learned will help you get off on the right foot.Photo of women meeting courtesy of Shutterstock.

Top Techniques and Tips for Training Salespeople

Top Techniques and Tips for Training SalespeopleTop Techniques and Tips for Training SalespeopleTwo types of training fall under the umbrella of sale training. The first is teaching the basic mechanics of schlussverkauf- how to sell in the general sense, with an emphasis on the best ausverkauf techniques for your industry or customer base. The second type is company-specific training- addressing details about your products and services, the sales process that your team uses, and the tools and resources used by your company. Every salespart, no matter how experienced, can benefit from both types of sales trainingbecause learning how to sell is an ongoing process. Salespeople always have new strategies and new technologies to learn in order to sell effectively. When you bring a new salesperson on board, the priority will be to completecompany-specific training. Unless your new employee is a rank beginner, that person will have at least a basic grasp of the mechanics of selling. However , its likely the new salesperson wont know much about your companys products or how the companys sales process works. Getting Started The easiest way to get started is to sit the new salesperson down with your customer service team. The customer service people are intimately familiar with your products and know what existing customers like the most- or the least. Let the new salesperson listen in on a few customer service calls, and give the new hire access to as much documentation about the products as possible. Documentation ranges from user guides to brochures to your websites. Once familiar with your product line, partner the new person up with an experienced member of the sales team. Listening to phone calls and riding along on appointments gives a new employee an idea of how the process works. Just experiencing one sale- from beginningto end- can have a lasting impact. Training Internally or Externally If your new salesperson demonstrates weaknesses in a particular are a (for example, she is great at getting appointments but chokes at the close) then its time for some basic training. You can either train internally (that is, do it yourself or assign a senior salesperson) or externally (for example, signing your new employee up for formal training such as a sales training class). Internal training is cheaper and you can customize it to your employees needs, but its time-consuming. It can end up costing you more in the long run if your best salespersonspends valuable time doing the training instead of making sales. An alternative is to combine both approaches sign the new employee up for an external class, then arrange for that person to practice internally by arranging role-playing sessions or sending him out on appointments. Regarding seasoned salespeople, any time you add a new product or service, all of your salespeople need to know about it, not just the novices. 4 Universal Training Tips Use Empathy. Any good salesperson is a good dicke br etter bohren mssen-solver. If a salesperson puts themselves in their prospects shoes, theres a good chance theyll understand the prospects problem- and hopefully, a problem the prospects not aware of. A good salesperson has the ability to look ahead. They can say to a prospect, Down the road (in two or three months from now) youre going to encounter a problem with XYZ.Once you identify a problem the customer wasnt aware of (and you offer a solution), you become valuable. Craft a Script. Make sure your sales force has a solid foundation to stand on.Meaning, without sounding like a robot, make sure your team knows the basics of what theyre selling. You want their script, so to speak, to become second nature when talking to a customer. This way, theyre not bogged down with having to remember the background information and can focus on the specific needs of the particular client.Identify the Bad Customer. Spotting the tell-tale signs of a customer whos window shopping or the chronic com plainer wholl just end up returning the product is important. Two red flags that you can pass on to your salespeople include prospects who are rude during the sales process (and arent worth the aggravation) and needy prospects thatll email you five times a day (and arent worth the time). Help your salespeople spot the badeanstalt customers so they can focus on selling to the good customers because theyre the ones that will keep your sales numbers up. Overcoming Fear. Especially when it comes to less experienced salespeople, you need to help them overcome fear. For starters, most people have a fear of rejection- and rejection comes with every sales job. Let your salespeople know that they will get rejected- a lot. And remember, even the most social people have a fear of public speaking. To help prepare them, have each member of your team practice making presentations to other sales members so they (slowly) overcome their fear of performance. Top Sales Training Techniques Heres a round-up of the most common formats for delivering sales training Courses. The typical course format, either in person or online, is a great way to transfer your sales knowledge to teammates. Also, the course format allows your salespeople to do their training on a schedule that works for them while allowing you to keep track of their progress. In-person workshops.Short in-person workshops break up the work day and are a good way to build excitement surrounding your ongoing sales training. Hiring outside consultants. If you have too many people to train, or you cant deliver effective in-house training, its time to look at hiring an outside consultant to come in and do the training. An experienced consultant can add a lot of value based on a wealth of experience, valuable market information, and the ability to customize your sales tools. It can also help you get buy-in by bringing in an expert. Conferences.Conferences allow employees to learn from proven leaders and get a pulse on what s trending in your market. Conferences also present the opportunity to engage your entire team so that everyone gets the benefit of attending industry training. Internal team testing.Sometimes the best way to learn is by being thrown into the deep end. Conducting an audit of past sales cycles, both successful and unsuccessful, is a great way to train a salesperson by using real-world applications. Field training feedback is key. Most talent development happens in the field. However, the analysis and feedback a salesperson receives after a call are what resonates. If you emphasize listening to clients and understanding client needs in a real sales situation and then provide specific feedback (good and bad), youll impact a persons ability to sell. Training Tips Use e-learning to educate. If your sales team doesnt know your product front to back, even the best listeners will fall short in closing a sale. Salespeople, especially new recruits, need to understand product details to boos t their confidence when selling. With sufficient product training, they can identify specific client issues and understand products details well enough to position the product as the perfect solution. E-learning allows sales teams to brush up on their product knowledge wherever they are. Through online videos and modules, you can also track progress to ensure that everyone has viewed the necessary materials. Try micro-learning.Salespeople are just like everyone else in general, they cant retain a huge amount of information at one time. Most multi-day sales training events are essentially a waste of money because participants suffer from something called the MEGO effect (my eyes glaze over). Keep all training sessions short and pace them out so that employees have time to absorb and test them. Reward specific achievements.Salespeople are driven by goals (probably more so than other employees), which makes an achievement-based training program another excellent option. However, dont g eneralize your teams success. A much more effective sales training technique is totell people they are doing a good jobbecause they exceeded their quarterly goal by a certain percentage or to recognize their performance in closing a particularly difficult sale. Share success stories.According to the National Business Research Institute, employee attitude affects40 to 80 percentof customer satisfaction. High employee engagement and morale has a direct impact on the bottom line. Sharing mutual successes also instills a sense of unity in your salespeople and encourages them to work harder and smarter.
